Supporting small businesses

Supporting small business rate relief will be introduced for businesses that face significant increases in their rate bills due to the loss of small business rates relief. Early indications are that this measure will apply to less than one hundred businesses in the borough and that its effect will be to limit any increase in rates to £600 for the 2017/18 billing year. The Council will be adjusting the rate bills of the businesses concerned as soon as possible.

New business rate relief scheme for pubs

The new relief scheme for pubs will provide a discount of £1,000 for pubs with a rateable value of less than £100,000. This measure is for the 2017/18 year only. Where a pub is part of a chain an application form will be made available as soon as possible. Where pubs are run as individual businesses the Council will adjust their rates bills as soon as possible.

New discretionary relief scheme

The new discretionary relief scheme will allow the Council to provide some support to ratepayers facing increases in their bills. Before the Council can introduce its own scheme it will need to consult on its proposals with the Greater London Authority and locally and have confirmation of the amount of funding the Government will provide. This is anticipated to be around £2.8m while the overall increase in rates payable in Kensington and Chelsea for 2017/18 is £58m.

Once the Council has agreed its scheme and the funding of it has been confirmed, details will be published on its website and arrangements put in place for eligible businesses to apply.
